Here at SingMa, the Cats provide rules and guide beginners to learn mahjong step-by-step. Making it your all in one stop for all things mahjong. The rules provided are only a guide and there are always alternatives in the rules. It would be best to check with the host and other players on which set of rules are used.
Types of Tiles
Singaporean Mahjong uses 148 tiles unlike the usual 144 tiles. The additional 4 tiles comes from the Animal tiles. Circles, Bamboos, Characters, Winds, Dragons and Flowers tiles make up the rest of the 144 tiles.
Hand Configuration
The easiest way is to use the basic moves of Chi and Pong or Kang. However if a player wins without a point, it will be considered a fake win and they will be penalised. So what is a winning hand and what's not one?
Seat Arrangement
Seating Arrangement is the first key part of a Mahjong game. Here's a clear and simple step-by-step guide to set things up.
Game Play
Now that the cats are seated, the actual gameplay commences. Stacking and Drawing of Tiles as well as Changing of Winds are some of the key processes during the gameplay.
Getting Money
Similar to many games, players will have to pay the winner after each round. In Mahjong, the number of points is not exactly what the players have to pay.
Point System
Singapore Mahjong requires at least 1 point to be able to win the round. The more points the winner has racked up in a round, the more money is won. The points can be stacked to win more money.
Special Hands
Special Hands gives you additional points to win it big. Some Special Hands also have the additional benefit of waiting for more than 2 tiles, thus making the chance of winning higher when waiting for the last tile.
