Hand Configuration
Winning Hand
A Winning Hand consists of 4 sets which can be either chi(吃), pong(碰) or kang(槓) and a pair(眼) with at least 1 point. In this case, the 1 point comes from the White Dragon. The 4 sets can be either Declared or Undeclared.
Declared or Undeclared?
Declared sets are made with another player's discarded tile while Undeclared sets are made by self drawing the tile from the pile.
The 2, 3, 4 Characters were made with a discarded and is considered Declared. The tiles in your hands are considered undeclared.
Chi 吃
- The Chi(吃) action is used for only bamboo, circles and character tiles as it needs to be 3 consecutive numbers within the same suit.
- Unless the player is waiting for the last and winning tile where the tile can come from any players, a Chi can only be performed by a player if the player on his left discards the tile needed to form the Chi.
- A player need not draw a tile from the pile if they wants to Chi the discarded tile. After this action, the player will discard a tile.
Pong 碰
- The Pong action can be used on all tiles except the flower tiles as it needs 3 of the same tile.
- A Declared Pong can be formed using any player's discarded tile.
- A Pong will take precedence in the event where one player wants to chi and another wants to pong.
- A player need not draw a tile from the pile if they want to pong. After this action, the player will have to throw out another tile.
Kang 槓
- A Kang is similar to a Pong but it requires 4 of the same tile. The player has to replenish a tile from the flower pile and discard a tile after declaring it.
- There are 3 types of Kang:
- The player has a declared pong and self drew the same tile. By declaring this kang, it allows other players to form a winning hand by "stealing" the kang tile.
- The player has an undeclared pong and another player discard the same tile. If another player wins from the discared tile after the kang is declared, it will not considered as "stealing" the kang.
- The players self drawn all 4 of the same tile is known as undeclared kang. The player can decide whether or not to declare the Kang. This kang cannot be stolen to make a winning hand.
Fake Win 詐胡
A fake win occurs when a player declares a win without either a point or with an incomplete hand. The player has to pay the limit to the other players.
